An analytical review of the current state of affairs in the field of early warning of dangerous weather phenomena is given in the booklet. The unique automated early warning system for meteorological hazards "SVETOFOR", which has been developed at the initiative of Nuclear Safety Institute in cooperation with the State Organization "Hydrometcenter of Russia", and its main characteristics are described. The "SVETOFOR" system is superior to existing domestic systems in quality and accuracy of probabilistic assessment of dangerous meteorological phenomena and warns about such phenomena up to 5 days before. In addition, it has a great potential to increase the list of dangerous meteorological phenomena that should be warned about.

The booklet is designed for a wide range of experts in the field of meteorology, as well as the officers of the federal and municipal governments and regional administrations, experts of EMERCOM and other agencies, government and commercial organizations interested in obtaining prompt warnings on weather threats.

Work on development and implementation of "SVETOFOR" system is conducted in the framework of priority research and development of the Technology Platform "Integrated Safety of Industry and Energy."
